3 Quick and Easy Energy Projects For Your Home

by Dave Logan

If you’re like a lot of folks we meet, nothing beats the quick and easy home improvement project! Everybody loves the project that can be knocked out in an hour or less, right? Well, here are a couple projects you can both knock out today and save money on tomorrow!

1) Install a programmable thermostat. There are over 50 million homes in The United States that still use inefficient dial-based thermostats. If you haven’t yet upgraded to a programmable thermostat, now is the time! Set your thermostat to automatically adjust your home’s temperature throughout the day. For example, while you’re at work during the day, the temperature in your home can be lower. And when you return from work in the evening, you can walk into a warmer house. Being able to vary the temperature in your home at the right times saves you energy and money. A programmable thermostat is very easy to install and inexpensive. Plan on spending anywhere from $40 to $100 and about an hour of your time.

2) Seal Your Windows. Pick up some weatherstripping for a few bucks at your local hardware store. Place it around your windows and doors for an instant remedy to drafts or cold air in the fall and winter months. If you plan to throw open those windows for the beautiful Colorado spring and summer months, then be sure to buy temporary seals and then replace them when fall arrives.

3) Drain your water heater. Over time, the water in your water heater will collect sediment, forcing the heater itself to work much harder. A harder working water heater means an increase in leak potential. Instead of compromising your ability to take a nice, hot shower each morning, plan on draining about one quart of water from your water heater every three to four months. This will get rid of the sediment buildup and prolong the life of your water heater.

As always, consult your professional contractor for advice or additional energy-saving tips. You might be surprised to learn that you can make a big difference for only a little time invested.
