We all know that houses can't talk. Even if they could, what would they say? Maybe they would tell us that it is time for some new windows. Well, good news, houses have their own special way of telling us when something isn't right.
Your house might be saying that your windows are becoming old and outdated. If you have builder grade windows that are more than 5 years old, it's time to make an upgrade. Windows don't last forever, but good quality and well maintained windows can last up to 20 to 30 years! And depending on where you live, your windows may begin to show signs of age sooner rather than later. Say you live in Denver; your windows may last 10 years longer than windows in Florida due to humidity, salt in the air, and wind speeds. The moral of the story is that you should listen carefully to your windows and your home. Look out for some of the following things:
1. Damaged, warped, or broken windows:
- Some damage can be repaired, such as slight damage to weather stripping or window hardware, like handles and cranks.
- Foggy/ drafty/ sticking windows that won't stay open.
- While repairs are possible, window replacements are always preffered to prevent future damage to existing windows.
2. You want to reduce your energy bill:
- Windows provide heat by letting in sunlight. LoE coatings can help keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter by trapping the heat or keeping it out.
- Drafty windows can increase your energy bill by 15-25%. Replacing windows with LoE and Argon gas can decrease your energy bill by 35-40%.
3. You want to give your home a makeover:
- What is the first thing you notice about a house? The windows! They are the most prominent feature on a home, and they give the house its character.

4. You just survived a severe storm:
- If you live in a hurricane zone, tornado alley, or in the path of the hailstorm of the century, chances are you will need to replace a window or two.
- Hail damage and other "Acts of God" are easily covered by your home owners insurance for a full replacement. The best part about this kind of replacement is that you pay no out of pocket.
