Local Matters: Take Care Of Those Gutters!

by Dave Logan

Now that it’s officially spring in Colorado, it’s time to climb a ladder and clean those gutters out! When it comes to proper gutter care and leak prevention, you need to simply get in the habit of occasional maintenance. When gutters are ignored, they will crack and rust; requiring much more work and eventually replacement. Taking care of your gutters isn't hard to do. Make a note to clean them out every few months, and they will last for decades.

Gutter Cleaning and Maintenance in Colorado The best maintenance you can possibly do for your gutters is simply keeping them clean and clear of debris. In more heavily wooded areas like on the front range and in the mountains, you may want to consider purchasing leaf guards to help keep leaves, pine cones, dirt, and other debris out of your gutters. If not, plan on cleaning your gutters out a few times per year. Gutter debris over time will prevent water from properly draining through the downspout. Consequently, it will sit and begin to rot the metal and cause leaks at the gutter seams. Make sure your gutters are properly pitched so water runs downhill at a constant flow. This will prevent any pooling and leaking.

Keeping your gutters maintained is an easy thing to do and will save you a lot of trouble and money down the road.
